Beaubien Lake

Beaubien_0118.jpg

Beaubien Lake is a beautiful little lake in Northwest Ontario, north of Kenora. I have only been here once but definitely intend to go back often to explore various routes into the lake. The only campsite we found on the lake is magnificent. Although I am not a fisherman, those I was with seemed to get a number of strikes.

Riding Mountain 2008

riding_mountain_2008_0071.jpg

This is a new album of photos taken during my annual 'retreat' to Riding Mountain in September 2008. Like most of the Riding Mountain pics in other albums, fall colours predominate. Mostly the yellows of Aspens, these colours contrast with the green of spruce and pine to create a dazzling spectacle for the eye.

Riding Mountain

09_RMNP_0690_2006.jpg

Riding Mountain National Park is in the heart of Manitoba's Parklands Region. The town of Wasagaming on beautiful Clear Lake is the southern gateway to the park. The park itself is a prime example of northern boreal forest. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife; particularly elk, moose, black bears, wolves, coyotes and virtually every other species native to Manitoba.

Northwest Ontario

13_ELA_Fall_0433_2005.jpg

Northwest Ontario is a backcountry lover's paradise. Also known as Sunset Country, it is part of the historical fur trade route. Thousands of lakes and rivers interconnect to provide an endless choice of canoe routes for the paddling enthusiast.

Eastern Manitoba

12_Mantario_97_010.jpg

Eastern Manitoba is where the Canadian Shield meets the prairies; lots of lakes and rivers, many of which drain into massive Lake Winnipeg through the Winnipeg River drainage basin. Whiteshell, Nopoming and Atikaki Provincial Parks are some of the highlights.

Agriculture and Rural

Sunflower_1013_2006.jpg

Manitoba is very much an agriculture-based economy and many of the small farms and supporting towns are highlighted here. The farms are as diverse as the people who own them, reflecting many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Western Manitoba

Spruce_Woods_001.jpg

Western Manitoba is usually thought of as primarily agricultural land but it also has a surprising diversity of landscapes. There are the Souris River and Pembina River valleys that cut across much of the landscape. The Assiniboine River is a flatland river meandering across the prairies and through Spruce Woods Provincial Park and the Carberry desert.

Interlake

Winnipeg_Beach_0005_2006.jpg

Manitoba's Interlake is roughly the area located between 2 enormous lakes - Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba. Once covered by glaciers then later by the monstrous Lake Agaziz, these lakes are what remains. The lakes are the source for a large fishing industry as well as a booming resort and cottage industry. Between the lakes, agriculture is the dominant commercial enterprise.

Aerial Winnipeg

aerial_winnipeg__0011.jpg

This album contains aerial photography of downtown Winnipeg and surrounding areas. Taking off from St Andrews airport, we circled the downtown area 3 or 4 times. Conditions were fairly turbulent so getting all the shots was difficult to say the least.

Winnipeg

Historic_0337_2006.jpg

Winnipeg is the capitol of Manitoba, situated at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers. It has a population of about 700,000. Winnipeg is central to the Canadian grain trade and also supports a widely diversified manufacturing sector. A number of festivals dot the calendar. The Winnipeg Folk Festival in July is world-class. In August there is Folklorama, highlighting the many and varied ethnic cultures represented in the city. In February it is Festival du Voyageur celebrating Winnipeg's French roots.

Festival du Voyageur

Festival_du_Voyageur_1028_2007-01.jpg

Festival du Voyageur is an annual winter festival held in February to celebrate the French roots of Winnipeg. French, Aboriginal, Scottish and Metis entertainment highlight the intertwining of these cultures in the early days of the fur trade. Internationally renowned snow sculptors come to the festival to compete and the results are stunning.

People

Cycletouring_0005.jpg

I'm not much of a photographer of people. I wouldn't go so far as to say they get in the way of a good shot, but. . .

Britain

Britain_0041_1975.jpg

What can I say about Britain? It is my ancestry, historically more important than it should be and an incredibly beautiful place. These images were taken during 3 trips to Britain beginning in 1973 and ending in 1993. Much changed in that time and not all for the better. It is still beautiful but sadly, has lost its spirit.

Flora and FaunaThe Flora and Fauna Gallery is just that - images of plants and animals. The Forest Floor album is of interest to those who like to get down close to the earth and observe the world of lichens, mushrooms and other fungi and small plant life.

Wildlife

Riding_Mountain_0594_2006.jpg

Most of the wildlife pictures shown here were taken at Riding Mountain. It is an island of forests and meadows surrounded by farm land. Driving the backroads at dawn or dusk is sure to turn up some great opportunities.

Forest Floor

White_Otter_035_mushrooms.jpg

These are mostly pictures of stuff found in the natural world taken with macro equipment. There are always interesting things to see when you get down close to the ground and explore what is hiding at your feet.

Closeups, Patterns and TexturesThis gallery consists of photos that are less documentary and more interpretive. Macro photography is the primary vehicle for getting these images. Textures found in old wood, glass and stone provide interesting abstracts.

Abstracts

Abstract_196_2003.jpg

This album is made of of two distinct sets of images. The first set of photos is a series of abstracts I call "Liquid Light". They are colours and patterns that you can make your own interpretations about.

Textures and Macros

Lake_Winnipeg_0023_2006.jpg

These images highlight textures and patterns found in nature. Not necessarily macro shots, but close up enough meant to feature the interpretive nature of the image rather the documentary presentation of the whole

PhenomenaI have named this gallery 'Phenomena' with the hopes of capturing more weather related shots. Currently the images in these albums relate to winter weather and the beauty of phenomenon like hoar frost. Also included here are shots of the 1979 eclipse that was experienced in Winnipeg.
